Frenectomy

A frenectomy is a surgical procedure to remove or modify a small piece of gum tissue called frenum. It is commonly done to treat lip-tie or tongue tie.

There are two types of frenectomy:

  1. Labial frenectomy: This refers to the removal or alteration of frenum that attaches the inside of the upper or lower lip to the gum tissue. When a labial frenum is exceptionally short, thick, tight, or extends too close to the teeth, it can cause spacing issues between the teeth or contribute to gum recession.
  2. Lingual frenectomy: This refers to the removal or alteration of frenum that connects the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. If the lingual frenum is too tight or short, it can restrict the movement of the tongue, resulting in a condition called tongue-tie.
In such cases, a frenectomy is performed to address these concerns by removing or repositioning the problematic frenum. It is important to note that if you have concerns about your frenum or oral health, it is best to consult with a qualified dental professional who can evaluate your specific situation and provide appropriate advice and treatment.
